Deutsche Bahn initiative

Throughout Berlin, you'll see bikes that look like this. They were introduced onto the streets by Die Bahn, Germany's railway company, as a way of reducing congestion around the city.

The bikes are electronically locked. Once registering with DB, you can phone them up (phone number is on the bikes), tell them the bike number and how long you want to rent the bike for, and they'll release the lock so that you can use it. When you've finished with the bike, you just leave it wherever you stop, for the next person to use.

It's quite cheap to use this system. Only trouble is that a lot of people never find bikes in the areas that they want to use them in!

  1. Sounds like a great project if they can iron out the small problems.
