Carriage Door

In the days of horse-drawn carriages, these doors would be open wide so that the carriage could enter the building to let the passengers alight undercover. They would then ascend a stairwell to access the house.

This door is in Berlin and J tells me that they were common in the affluent areas of the city and can still be seen in big numbers in Hungary.

  3. DReb: that's interesting - I must ask my mother if such doors existed in Calcutta when she lived there.

Suramya: thanks! They are beautiful doors - such solid protective wood, yet so welcoming at the same time.
