...means "women" in the Bambara language. I visited a vegetable garden project in Zelabougou, Mali and everywhere I went one common theme manifested itself in the outskirts of Bamako and beyond; women are everywhere and women do most if not all the work. Most women I spoke with had 7 kids on average, tended the land and ran the household. Some worked other jobs beyond that. I was told all the man was required to do was provide a bag of rice to his family each month. This huge workload doesn't stop them from pursuing the hope of providing a better future for their children through education.Shaykhspeara Sha'irahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00833022453340893713noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36869151.post-35055495746490703692013-02-25T01:00:00.000+01:002013-02-25T01:00:05.517+01:00Friendly Face

I am a big fan of classical indian dance traditions. This photo shows a dance-off between two of eight very different classical indian styles of dancing. Each style has its own set of face expressions, clothes and accessories, particular style of movement and rhythm. The first style shown is Odissi and the second is Kathak.Shaykhspeara Sha'irahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00833022453340893713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36869151.post-44863891597308117702013-02-04T14:03:00.000+01:002013-02-05T13:33:03.303+01:00Turning to God

dance + art + public transportation = a brighter day on the subway (and a good shot for my phone's lock screen)

The NYC subway has its share of sometimes cheesy and sometimes disturbing marketing (how many plastic surgery ads do I really need to see when I want to get from uptown to downtown??). But a lot of the time, the ads rise to the challenge of competing for people's attention in one of the greatest art and dance cities in the world. I love how this poster for the NYC Ballet Art Series unexpectedly combines classical dance with tattoo art in a graphic style--doesn't that girl's face remind you of Lichtenstein?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36869151.post-72848075955682015172013-01-31T23:53:00.000+01:002013-01-31T23:53:38.622+01:00That Golden Moment ....
